Wow. Just wow.
I knew the House had voted to rebuke Joe Wilson, the Congressman who called Obama a liar during his latest weekly address. What I didn’t realize, and haven’t heard elsewhere, is that in that rebuke, they also did the following:
Democrats voted to censure Wilson, as well as ban on the House floor any use of the words “liar,” “hypocrite,” “cowardly,” “intellectually dishonest,” and “giving aid and comfort to the enemy” in describing the President.
If that’s true, that is not only grade school level of intellect, but honestly pretty chilling in implication.
I know the First Amendment gets thrown around a lot in a lot of cirumstances where it just doesn’t apply. But I’d think if there was ever a textbook case of violation of the First, this is it.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
They aren’t making a law that abridges our freedom of speech but it restricts their own. And it isn’t a law anywhere but in the House. Yet.
Beyond that, as many have noted recently, the over the top screams of the boy who cried racism could well become a self-fulfilling prophecy. If it were to evolve into black on white racism, I’m sure the players of the race card would be perfectly okay with that. After all, it’s only fair that people who had zilch to do with slavery and racism be subjected to slavery and racism, right? After white people are in chains and spit upon for decades then we can all play nice, right?
And this is a very dangerous weapon to so recklessly wield; between the anger it will stoke amongst like-minded blacks and the righteous anger of a white population outraged at having been so wrongly defamed, they might well inadvertently re-ignite the very racial conflict that they claim to abhor, is now in the past, and only exists in their victimhood-addled minds.
I don’t believe that racism has been vanquished. It never will be completely as long as the human race exists. Even if we interbreed till we are all a tan color (which I personally am in favor of) there will always be people who disdain and hate others for being too white or too brown or too red. Or for having green eyes instead of brown. Or for being too short or too tall. If you could eliminate racism, there would be discrimination based on something else.
But I think we have made amazing strides and some people just will refuse to see that. Ever. It removes an excuse to be outraged and something to blame problems on other than personal failings.
Funny that groups who have long trumpeted their embrace of progressive ideals and abhorence of the status quo are so invested in maintaining the very thing they accuse conservatives of wanting to preserve.

My post at Geek’s:
–”If ANY place deserves protection through the First Amendment, it’s Congress, for they represent (or are supposed to represent) the voice of the People.
If, IF, this law stands, what is to stop them from enforcing it to their own constituents??”–
I would like to add that I believe, with all the flinging of the word “RACIST” around, they are PURPOSELY trying to push us (and by “us”, I mean those who don’t measure a person by race) into a war, just so they can prove to the world how awful we are, for being so racist as to go after the very ones who measure everything by a racial prism.
You are either right, LC, or they just are so completely clueless that they think their words will have no impact. That everyone will be duly cowed by charges of racism and they can get away with whatever they want. And you are quite correct. Congress should be the last place on earth subject to restricted speech.

And I figured you’d post that sooner or later, Phil. :)
