Never forget them

poppy

Everyone will have a Veteran’s Day post up today, and I am no different. We need to remember and to teach our children to remember the sacrifices soldiers made and continue to make to keep us safe and free. Though the red poppy originated in decades past for wars long since ended, it stands as a symbol for all of those who gave their all in combat in protection of freedom. Just because Flander’s Field has since spread to other locales – some sandy, some tropical- it doesn’t mean we who benefit from those sacrifices are freed of our obligation to remember and give thanks. And not just to American soldiers, but to all men and women of all nations who risk their lives and sometimes pay the ultimate price in defense of liberty.

In Flander’s Field
by John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow,
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky,
The larks, still bravely singing, fly,
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead.
Short days ago,
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved and now we lie,
In Flanders Fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe
To you, from failing hands, we throw,
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us, who die,
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow,
In Flanders Fields.

Absolutely Necessary Update:

American soldiers are not just the guardians of peace… they are its architects. They build it with the invisible bricks of atrocities that did not occur, because the murderers were sensibly afraid of tangling with them. They add the mortar of countless acts of kindness and mercy, performed in war zones and disaster areas.

Read. It. All.

My mother used to recite that poem to me when I was but a lad.

Nicole, check your email or just stop over. I have an amusing mission for the rest of us. Pass it on.
