Twits who Tweet
I have been baffled for awhile by the need to inform everyone what you do every 5 minutes of your day. But I also don’t have a cell phone attached to my hip (except when I need a watch) so I’m not into the whole I-can’t-ever-be-out-of-touch deal. I’m just not that important and I know it.
If anybody cares what teenage girls have to say, I have not met them. Giving them computers and I-Pods and I-Phones and I-everything else has turned them into the people of I, I, I, I, I. Yet, if MySpace is the beginning of the end of civilization, then Twitter is bringing the Apocalypse.
As Mr. Golub notes, yes, blogs are part of the me thing as well and yes, I do have one. And occasionally I will post a personal story or picture or something. That is mainly because I know that 95% of the people who read my scribblings know me and my family in real life. And 75% of those don’t live in the same state with us. So it is a way to keep in touch from time to time. Mostly I rant about stuff I read online and it’s a way to point a couple of friends to articles they might not find otherwise.
Mostly, I don’t expect great audiences and to that end, I didn’t go out and register my blog with any search engines to try to drive up traffic. I don’t check my traffic stats except one a month or so and then I laugh when I see how many hits are from me, using my blog as a mobile favorites bookmark holder.
I think that anyone who feels anyone else on the planet needs to be informed about your breakfast and your purchasing decisions on a minute by minute basis needs to be locked in a room with no mirrors, no company and no access to phones or internet for about a month. But I guess they are all just following the example of our Messiah in Chief. He can’t go 3 hours without hearing his own voice on the radio or tv or seeing a picture of himself somewhere. And much like the tweeting twits he often has nothing to say but empty air.
I guess as long as tweets happen online and not outloud, they at least aren’t taking up any oxygen that the rest of us could use.
