Amen
First, let me qualify this post by saying that I am not a tech-Luddite. I don’t think we all should live in caves with “fire bad” grunts being our only outlet of expression. I am all for the internet. But it would be willful blindness to not admit the downside of instant communications tech.
Yet, at some point, politics became “cool.” That’s great and all, and I encourage civic responsibility, but something has been lost along the way. Part of being politically active, either working to support a candidate or movement, or voting, is to be informed. It is your responsibility to educate yourself so you can make responsible, informed decisions.
The “net” generation naturally goes to the Internet for knowledge. Bad idea. Uninformed, tech savvy, indoctrinated young people spread information to other tech savvy, uninformed, indoctrinated young people. This information is treated as fact. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The left loves this. The entire Obama campaign was about this. A huge pool of uninformed, yet arrogant voters is what the left has been working to create for decades.
Look at the rest of this post and check out what these entitled, hip, young, Obama voters are cluttering up cries for help from Iran with.
And yes, I do realize that anything on the net can be faked – the Obama tweeters, the Iran tweeters, all of it, any of it or none of it.
But I am still foolish enough that when I know people are fighting for their lives and freedom that I tend to err on the side of believing them. If they fool me by appealing to my compassionate side, then so be it. Who is the poorer? The person with compassion or the one who takes advantage of it?
Inasmuch as the left needs uniformed voters who feel entitled by sheer virtue of existing, they pretty much have their wish. I’m pretty sure it only lasts for a decade or so though for the smarter and more aware among them. And I’m also pretty sure that catering to a mob of petulant, self-indulgent, entitlement minded mental adolescents with Daddy issues isn’t a prescription for a long term power grab. Eventually the mob will turn on their erstwhile benefactors because, let’s face it, you can’t please all the people all the time. It just isn’t possible outside of fever dreams and fantasies. The left can have whatever fantasies they want – eventually they have to meet the real world. Reality can be redefined in your mind, but it doesn’t bend as easily as you may think.
